Larvicidal Efficacy of Plant Extracts against the Malarial Vector Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera: Culicidae)

چکیده
Malaria is transmitted by Anopheles stephensi and for controlling the malaria parasite Plasmodium spp., the vector mosquito has to be controlled. Extensive use of synthetic and chemical insecticides has resulted in environmental hazards and also in development of physiological resistance among vector mosquito species. Plant products are considered to be a potential alternative approach as they are environmentally safe, target specific and biodegradable. The extracts of seven plants viz., leaves of Abutilon indicum, Cleistanthus collinus, Leucas aspera, Murraya koenigii, aerial parts of Hyptis suaveolens and whole plants of Citrullus colocynthis and Sphaeranthus indicus with four different solvents viz., hexane, diethyl ether, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate were tested against the early third instar larvae of Anopheles stephensi. The larval mortality was calculated after 24 hours exposure period. The ethyl acetate extract of Leucas aspera was found to be effective with a LC value of 352.84 ppm. 50

Larvicidal and pupcidal efficacy of Momordica charantia leaf extract and bacterial insecticide, Bacillus thuringiensis against malarial vector, Anopheles stephensi Liston. (Diptera: Culicidae)
The efficacy of leaf extracts of Momordica charantia and Bacillus thuringiensis has been proven against larvicidal and pupicidal activities of the malarial vector, Anopheles stephensi. The present study investigated the larvicidal and pupicidal activity against the first to fourth instar lavae and pupae of the laboratory-reared mosquitoes, An. stephensi. The plant extract showed larvicidal and ...

Methanolic extracts of leaves and seeds from the chinaberry tree, Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) was tested against mature and immature mosquito vector Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera) under laboratory condition. The extract showed strong larvicidal, pupicidal, adulticidal, antiovipositional activity, repellency and biting deterency. The M. azedarach seed and leaf extracts were used to dete...
متن کاملLarvicidial Effects of essential oil and methanol extract of Achilleawilhelmsii C. Koch (Asteraceae) against Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera: Culicidae), a malaria vector
Background: Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of many pathogens and parasites and consequently serious diseases in humans. Currently, application of plant derivatives has been suggested as an alternative bio-control technique for these medically important vectors. Methods: In this study the essential oil and methanol extract of Achilleaw...

Secondary metabolites obtained from the indigenous plants with proven mosquito control potential can be used as an alternative to synthetic insecticides under the integrated vector control. The essential oil extract from the forest redgum, Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm. (Myrtaceae) was tested against mature and immature mosquito vector Anopheles stephensi Liston (Diptera) under laboratory conditio...
